A Chat With Rowlett Public Library

Oct 12, 2020

The Rowlett Public Library is located in the heart of the Village of Rowlett Downtown. It houses over 60,000 books and 12,000 movies for you to browse, borrow and explore for free with a Rowlett Library Card. The Library also offers a variety of digital resources including eBooks, eAudiobooks, streaming services, and digital magazines that are available at no cost to Library cardholders.

This month we had the opportunity to chat with Mary Lynn Saxton, a librarian at Rowlett Public Library, about the library's response to the pandemic, virtual services and activities being offered, the most popular book requests this summer, and why she loves the library's location.

How did the library have to adapt to the COVID-19 pandemic?

We were the first City of Rowlett facility (other than Fire and Police) to reopen after everyone shut down at the beginning of 2020. Staff brainstormed ways to offer services and programs virtually. Storytimes were created for Facebook, temporary digital access cards were issued, and GED and ESL classes were modified to happen via Zoom. Initially only curbside checkouts were offered. The Library's Summer Reading Program had to be completely modified for a first-ever virtual experience.

What virtual services and activities are being offered at the library?

Currently, the Library is operating with limited hours and offering curbside checkouts whenever we're open. Kids can enjoy a virtual storytime through the Library's Facebook page on Tuesdays at 10 am and pick up STEM activities along with craft kits to complete at home each week while supplies last. Patrons can print items from their personal computer or smartphone through the Library's PrinterOn app.

On Monday, October 19 the Library will finally be open with the normal operating hours of Monday through Thursday from 9:30 am to 8:30 pm and Friday through Saturday from 9:30 am to 5:30 pm. Programs will continue virtually and the Library will finally be able to provide a limited number of computers for the public to use.

What were some of the most requested books this past summer?

New DVD and best seller releases for adults were the most popular and for kids the Diary of a Wimpy Kid and Dogman series were favorites with young patrons.

What is your favorite thing about being located in the Village of Rowlett Downtown?

We love the downtown atmosphere, especially when the markets are happening downtown.
